Excellent summary of medical services available in Shanghai.

That said most foreigners can't afford the 'high end' clinics unless they are covered by expensive insurance. CT scans (ca. US$25), MRIs (ca. US$50) etc. are far far cheaper in local hospitals that also use new imported equipment and since the local hospitals see an incredible number of patients the doctors and surgeons are extremely knowledgeable and well practiced.

After 25 years living here I'm happy to use the local hospitals for everything. Although expats are not supposed to use them for treatment requiring an overnight stay taking up a bed I did recently due to the emergency nature of my affliction (PE and DVT). 'One step from death' they said - but their service was immediate and impeccable (even if in communal wards) and in the CCU exceptional.

That's the second time I've been operated on in China. The first was in one of those wings targeting foreigners/wealthy locals. That was not a good experience as far as hygiene was concerned. This recent (mis)adventure in a local hospital was far better - the CCU was spotless!
